Note for Students on Style Guidelines

This anthology draws its content from a variety of sources, many of which adhere to style rules other than those of the Modern Language Association (MLA). What is a style guideline? It is a standardized set of rules for formatting documents, citing sources, and structuring content to ensure clarity, consistency, and academic integrity in writing.

In your own writing this semester, you are expected to follow MLA style guidelines. It is useful to be aware, however, that different fields of study and/or publication types have their own norms that they follow. For example, news periodicals use Associated Press (AP) style, the social sciences use American Psychological Association (APA) style, and general publications use Chicago Manual of Style. If you are unsure how to format something, consult the MLA Style website for clarification.
