Chapter 2: Introduction

How do you feel about your learning abilities? Take this quick survey to figure it out, ranking questions on a scale of 1–4, 1 meaning “least like me” and 4 meaning “most like me.” These questions will help you determine how the chapter concepts relate to you right now. As you are introduced to new concepts and practices, it can be useful to reflect on how your understanding changes over time. We’ll revisit these questions at the end of the chapter to see whether your feelings have changed.

  1. Learning for me is easy. I don’t even have to think about it.
  2. I have a preferred learning style.
  3. If I can’t learn something right away, I have difficulty staying with it.
  4. I think my teachers are the most significant aspect of my learning.

You can also take the Chapter 2 survey anonymously online.

Student Profile

“As a marketing major I want to focus on social media marketing. Naturally, I have had an interest in social media marketing without even realizing it the past couple of years. I love Instagram, YouTube and the content creators on those platforms. Influencer marketing is the go-to strategy for companies these days, so I decided why not give it a shot.

I always knew I wanted to own my own business and work for myself. I wanted to make a platform of my own, so I started making YouTube videos and focused on creating relationships with my audience on social media. My YouTube channel has over 5,000 views combined, and my Instagram account has over 1,000 followers. Recently my old manager I worked for reached out to me to see if I’d be interest in running his social media accounts for some restaurants, he runs down at the Riverwalk here in San Antonio. Within two weeks of posting effectively on his Instagram accounts there has been a 95% increase with engagement across all 4 accounts I am responsible for. That sparked an interest in becoming a social media manager. I am currently working towards getting the paperwork together to have my own business doing that.

My first semester helped me with challenges I did not know I had. In the EDUC 1300 class, I learned how to take lecture notes, how to study for my marketing exams and how to transfer learning to my projects. During the 1300 and my business classes, I was able to keep my work and projects and create a website in Canvas.

When I heard about the Canvas Student ePortfolio (Portfolium) I knew I had to put my links on there in case a business owner came across my account. I’m happy that this is another tool I can use to connect to others that I don’t have physical access to!”
