Student Highlights
My name is Jason, and I am a passionate poet, budding entrepreneur, and aspiring community leader from San Antonio, Texas. As a proud Latino, I am deeply committed to activism and hope to bring positive changes to my barrio and the broader community. Despite growing up in poverty, I have overcome life’s challenges with determination and resilience, focusing on empowering myself and others through education and opportunity.
As a freshman at San Antonio College, I have found solace and inspiration in my new academic environment. This close-knit campus feels like a family away from home, providing me with the encouragement, resources, and support I need to thrive both academically and personally. I am majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Data Analysis, and I am excited to learn more about how these skills can contribute to my future endeavors.
I have already become involved in various extracurricular activities on campus, including community service programs and Latino student organizations. These groups have allowed me to pursue my passion for poetry and activism, and they have introduced me to like-minded individuals who share my commitment to making a difference.
My name is Gissel, and I am twenty years old. I am a student at San Antonio College. I was born in Piedras Negras, Mexico, in 2002 and moved to Eagle Pass, Texas, within the day. I was raised in Eagle Pass, and at age eleven, I found out that I was undocumented.
After graduating from high school, I moved to San Antonio for college. Now I am pursuing my education at San Antonio College and plan on transferring to a four-year university to eventually earn my master’s degree in Psychology. I was inspired by my licensed professional counselor, who changed and saved lives, to become one myself in the future.
My Professor for EDUC 1300 helped me become who I am today. She taught me how to learn, how to view life from a different perspective, and how to be a leader. Because I am an undocumented student, it is very difficult to find someone who understands and is willing to hear me out regarding my life struggles. My professor was always there when I needed her. She supported and pushed me to become the best version of myself. With this support, I created a Dreamers Club at SAC for undocumented students like me, to have a safe place where they could be accepted regardless of their status. I am thankful to have taken the course and to have had an amazing professor who helped me grow as an individual and become who I am today.
My name is Dominique. I am a first-generation college student, a veteran, a mother, and a wife. San Antonio represents a new life, it’s the beginning of my legacy and it the place I want to serve. I am studying pre-nursing to become a registered nurse and treat veterans in my community.
Being at San Antonio College, I am supported by many resources. For example, as a veteran, I have access to the Victory Center which answers all questions related to veterans. I appreciate the resources the Advocacy Center offers. I am invited to join clubs that challenge me to strive higher and raise the bar for myself. I can’t shrink here because I belong here. As a student here at SAC, I have noticed the spirit this school has to help the students here succeed and follow their dreams.
I have a goal of graduating this year with my Associate degree in biology, with hopes of starting a bachelor’s program in Nursing. My long-term goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and specialize in mental health. Also, as a mother and nontraditional student, it is important to me to set a good example for my son. I want him to understand that he can do anything he sets his mind to.
Legacy is not only what we achieve but also the tools we pass to the next generation, and it is my responsibility as a mother to instill the benefit and importance of education into my son. It has been life-changing and a pleasure to be a student here at San Antonio College, and I will carry my pride in being a student here for the rest of my life.
