About U.S. History: Colonial Era to Civil War

U.S. History: Colonial Era to Civil War provides a balanced approach to U.S. history, considering the people, events, and ideas that have shaped the United States from both the top down (politics, economics, diplomacy) and bottom up (eyewitness accounts, lived experience). U.S. History: Colonial Era to Civil War covers key forces that form the American experience, with particular attention to issues of race, class, and gender.

About the Author

History’s always been fascinating to Professor Victoria Beckman-Wilson, so she has been teaching and talking about it for decades.

Her hope with this textbook is that readers find something in it that sparks their interest in history, and inspires them to continue learning.

The other goal she had when creating this book was to make it accessible, readable, and most importantly, free for students. Education is valuable, but it’s also expensive. This no-cost textbook was created to make it easier for more people to reach their goals, both in class and ultimately, in their lives.
